A study by Keith Curry Lance showed that school libraries which are adequately staffed by at least one full-time, certified library media specialist and one full-time support staff member, are fully flexibly scheduled, maintain a strong computer network (one that connects the library's resources to classrooms and labs) leads to higher student achievement, regardless of social and economic factors in a community.
Test scores increased as library media specialists spent more time:
teaching cooperatively with classroom teachers
teaching information literacy skills independently of classroom teachers
providing in-service training to teachers; serving on curriculum and standards committees
managing information technology
This librarian follows a fixed schedule incorporating small group reading instruction in the morning and K-2 classes in the afternoon.
